Remember those discriminatory Democrats became Republicans. However modern Democrats do take minorities for granted. I am Democrat, and I am sick of people of both parties thinking that minorities want handouts. You are, obviously, basing your opinions on what you have read and seen on television. Minorities, you mean whites? I don't understand? You're obviously not in California. I think the majority or ';minorities'; are pro-democrat because of the frail belief that the Democratic party is pro-minority. Regardless of how the Democrats feel, ';minorities'; will continue to lean toward the Democratic side because of the ignorance that perpetuates in most voters. Unless a person becomes informed of the choices in a detailed fashion, their loosely held beliefs will direct critical choices in our political system, regardless of party affiliation.
No... it's just terminology. Back then, I believe Republicans were more on the liberal side, and ';Whigs'; aligned more with what's modernly called the Republican view. Individual people that make up the democratic party have no ties to what people did back then.... and plus, back then you would have been hard pressed to find a party that was completely devoid of discrimination and bigotry -- that was rampant in those days.

I'm a democrat and guess what? I think minorities should have to WORK for what they get, just like the rest of us. I think it's funny how if a party doesn't give minorities a bunch of handouts, we ';don't care.'; And since when did republicans have no history of discrimination or bigotry? What a crock!
