If a mentally ill person is released from an institution or jail, how do you know he will not reoffend?

No more than you know if anyone will reoffend; but every sentence has a finite life. If a mentally ill person is released from an institution or jail, how do you know he will not reoffend?
You don't know, but an institution usually does not release someone until they are stable. Jail is another whole different story as they are not physicians. One thing you need to know though is most mentally ill people are not dangerous in the slightest. That is a misconception. Most people with mental illness do very well on medication. The biggest problem is they have a pretty high risk of going off there meds, especially if a family member does not Monitor this.If a mentally ill person is released from an institution or jail, how do you know he will not reoffend?
There is no way to know. Just like there is no way to know whether a non-mentally ill prisoner will re-offend. But studies have found that recidivism rates (rates of re-offending) are about the same for the mentally ill/insane and the regulare prison population.
You don't.

It's practically the same as wondering if that perfectly sane person next door will suddenly commit the unthinkable.

Sick people can heal; ';normal'; people can quickly become sick.
you can't know, you won't know. All you can do is hope they are getting treatment so it dosnt happen again. Its the same as anyone being released from prison or state programs.
Buy a 649 lotto ticket. if you don't win on the 649 lottery you will hav better chance a winning the ';beng another victim of stupid policy policy'; award..
The same way you know that a person who is not mentally ill is not going to re-offend. You can never know.

Good Luck
you don't, you just have to have hope they wont do it again.
You don't.
You don't know.
