What percentage of prison inmates are mentally ill? Would they be there had they received mental health care?

If they had had mental health care early in there life, would they be in prison? How many homicides would not have occurred had these inmates received appropriate mental health care earlier in there lives? How mentally healthy will these prison inmates be once they are released back into society?

Just curious...What percentage of prison inmates are mentally ill? Would they be there had they received mental health care?
Since successive governments decided to close all the mental institutions and sell off the land for usually luxury housing, there is nowhere for mentally ill people who are in need of care and shelter to go.Tragically and occasionally a person will commit a crime, usually murder that could have been prevented if they had been in a place of safety. For themselves and other people of the general public. These poor souls are then incarcerated in unsuitable prisons when they should be in a place more suitable for their mental and physical condition. What percentage of prison inmates are mentally ill? Would they be there had they received mental health care?
';mental health care';, despite tens of decades of work, is not anywhere near even 50% successful.

Since our society decided that locking up the mentally challenged is inhumane, unless and until they prove themselves dangerous to someone, there will be persons who are mentally ill who commit crimes and they will end up in jail.

you have to balance the rights of the individual to refuse mental health care with the rights of the rest of society to enjoy life in reasonable safety.

GL I am unconvinced that the task is possible.
I don't know the percentage but I can respond to your other questions.

I understand that the largest part of prison inmates are black (don't scream at me for what I heard). And there are a lot of black kids who are impoverished with very little home training, education and they're around thugs. One other thing though is if they are from the poor areas then their mother doesn't get the medical care she needs when she's bearing that child so all kinds of things can occur as far as disabilities later on in life. If the mother is on drugs (and note that I said ';if';) then she is unable to care for her child properly. If a child doesn't learn what they're supposed to (including cuddling and closeness to human beings, learns to be honest, not steal, learns respect, learns how to learn, etc.) early in life then they take on the ideas of the thugs who control their area and so end up in jail. So all this starts with the mother, starts with the situation she's in, starts with the need for an understanding working father. Without all that things go awry and it's too late to change a child once that bad stuff has been ingrained. And once in jail they learn to do what the others do (for their own security) but it never goes away, so they can't be rehabilitated. So no mental health care would help. How would they be after prison time? They will just go back into prison by choice (their own).
