I want to become a clinical psychologist working with the mentally ill. How long will it take?

I am 18 years old and am very interested in the mentally ill i think a clinical psychologist would be great. Although i could not prescribe medicine and to be able to it will take more years. Is it not? How long will it take to become a clinical psychologist? and how long will it take to become a medical clinical psychologist? which is the best? and how long will each take?

I really need help!!! I just wish to have a career in a mental institution earning a decent salary. Any advice?I want to become a clinical psychologist working with the mentally ill. How long will it take?
Their Credentials make em different. Only one can give out prescriptions. The one that goes to medical school.

Psychiatrists begin their careers in medical school after 4 years of college. After earning their MD which takes another 4 years, they go on to four years of residency training in mental health, typically at a hospital's psychiatric department.

According to Marcia Goin, MD, past-president of the American Psychiatric Association and a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Southern California, psychiatric residencies include a range of subspecialized training, such as working with children and adolescents.

After completing their residency, these physicians can be licensed to practice psychiatry. This is 4 years minimum. subspecialty is another year or two.

Psychologists go through five to seven years of academic graduate study, culminating in a doctorate degree. They may hold a PhD or a PsyD. Those who are mainly interested in clinical psychology -- treating patients as opposed to focusing on research -- may pursue a PsyD.

Licensing requirements for psychologists vary from state to state, but at least a one- or two-year internship is required to apply for a license to practice psychology.I want to become a clinical psychologist working with the mentally ill. How long will it take?
It would probably just take an appropriate degree (four years) and then about a 1 training to become average. You could potentially have the job in 5 years if you got a decent degree.
its a great job if you enjoy drooling patients, and having either fecal matter or semen thrown in your face.
