qui-gon was in fact a very powerful jedi, he just didnt follow the rules so he couldnt be on the council.


When he died, he found a way to assimilate the force into making a ';ghost'; of himself. Becuase the force is everywhere and is everthing. so basically he was a spirit, he then taught yoda who in turn taught obi-wan.
